This Feature is Only Available on iPhone XS Max and Not on iPhone XS

iPhone XS Max and XS

There are so many reasons that Apple’s 2018 iPhone lineup is unlike its iPhones in the past. First and foremost, it is the first time Apple has added a third “R” option to its lineup. People have seen plenty of “S” updates in the past (obviously), but “R” is brand new. Also, you might be wondering why the tech giant chose the letter “R” to designate the iPhone XR. According to 9to5Mac, the answer is probably much worse than users can ever imagine: It is the letter that comes before “S.” But that is neither here nor there.

Apple released three new iPhone models in 2017 as well, but two of them were pretty much just small iterative upgrades from the iPhone 7/7 Plus. Also, these models were iterative upgrades from the iPhone 6s/6s Plus, which were iterative upgrades from the iPhone 6/6 Plus. In 2018, Apple is releasing three new iPhone models with similar designs and features, and all three of them adopt Apple’s new design identity. As far as exciting new features are concerned, well, there really are not any.

No Significant Feature

The lack of any marquee features on the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Plus has been a topic of heated debate ever since the phones were first announced earlier this month. There is no question that the iPhone XS and XS Max are the smallest “S” update the world has ever seen. There is also no question that for most iPhone users — anyone with literally any iPhone model other than last year’s iPhone X — the iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max will be the most significant upgrade in the history of the iPhone.

In terms of differences between the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max, there really are not any to speak of other than size. The Max has a 6.5-inch OLED screen while the iPhone XS has a 5.8-inch screen, and the bigger phone also obviously has a bigger battery. Apple has used a few features to separate regular iPhones from Plus models on occasion in the past. Examples are the inclusion of optical image stabilization on a Plus phone before it arrived on a smaller iPhone model and the dual-lens camera on the iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8 Plus.

That is not the case this time around. The iPhone XS Max does not have any notable features that you will not also find on the smaller iPhone XS. It turns out that there are a few feature discrepancies to be found if you dig deep enough, though, and a new one was uncovered this week.

Just the Same

As noted by official reports, the iPhone XS Max has an accessibility feature that people loved on earlier iPhone models but that was missing from the iPhone X last year: Display Zoom. By enabling the feature during the initial iPhone setup or anytime thereafter from within the phone’s accessibility settings, the content on the screen appears to be larger. This simply makes things easier but not necessarily a huge thing to look forward to.

Like the iPhone X, the feature is still missing from the iPhone XS. It i back on the iPhone XS Max though, so people who opt for Apple’s phablet this year will be able to enlarge the content on their displays by enabling the feature in Settings > Display & Brightness > View.
